Black Consciousness, Knowledge of Self and Pan Africanism - Asad Malik

Black Consciousness, Knowledge of Self and Pan Africanism

If you are new to the Black conscious community and are wondering where you should start in your journey to acquire knowledge of self, this article was written for you. struggling with which books to read to raise ones Black consciousness and acquire knowledge of self. There are many sites online that regurgitate Black history, or express the viewpoints of the writer, but fail to offer a starting point for gaining consciousness.
There are three very simple but very profound steps to gaining knowledge of self, but before I explain these steps, understand that "Black Consciousness" is not necessarily a destination – it's an ongoing journey that will last your entire life. If you were to live ten lifetimes, you would still not be able to acquire and use all of the information that exists within the Black diaspora. Black consciousness is a lifestyle, a thought process, and a means of interaction with yourself, your fellow Africans, and the Universe and all that it entails.
The three simple steps to gaining consciousness are learning, creating a lifestyle that addresses the 5 spheres of ones life from an Afrocentric frame of mind, and leading by example.

Learn It

The term "Black consciousness" was first used by a South African freedom fighter named Stephen Biko. Biko believed that the battle for total freedom and liberation can only come after one has been psychologically liberated. We all know someone who has been to prison many times. Once they are set free, they fail to develop themselves beyond the circumstances that made them easy prey for the so-called "criminal justice" system. History has also given us the example of slaves who, shortly after being emancipated, were manipulated to return to the plantation work. Such are examples of the importance of freeing one's mind first. Free your mind, and your body will follow.
Right knowledge corrects wrong behavior. – Michael Imhotep. African History Network Show
Gaining right knowledge is the only way to free your mind from the psychological slavery that this system of white global supremacy has inflicted upon you. In our article entitled "The Definition of Black Consciousness", we discuss the two specific psychological illnesses that we have been infected with. These are psychological disorientation and mentacide.
Psychological Disorientation
Psychological Disorientation can be defined as a mental condition in which any African (yes, that includes you, whether you live in Africa or not!) proceeds from or negotiates the environment with a conceptual base in which African-centered psychological and behavioral elements are not the operative ones. An African so afflicted manifests an orientation to reality that does not promote the maintenance of his or her race, but instead promotes the maintenance of the non-African group.
Examples include bleaching ones skin to look lighter, a preference for working with whites, doing business with whites, a preference for those outside of your own race, and an addiction to white culture. Understand – America, and most other Western Nations, were built by the sweat and blood of the 300 million Black men and women who were brought to them as slaves. These systems continue to operate on the exploitation of the Black man and woman.
You might think that you have a part to play in these Western societies, but ultimately, these are white societies, governed by white interests .Yes, even with a Black president. You have been duped into believing that your role in white countries is participatory – its not. Black men and women are pawns and cannon fodder for a global system of white supremacy.
Mentacide
Mentacide is the second psychological illness that we have been infected with. Mentacide is like a cancer that eats away at an African's self-consciousness or prevents it's development, thus alienating the African from his or her correct psychological disposition.
Examples of Mentacide include a "whitewashing" of the history taught to students and adults of African origin, the suppression or alteration of Black culture in favor of the culture of other races, or the negative portrayal of the Black race so as to propagate those negative characteristics (i.e. telling blacks they are inferior, hyper-sexualized, or of lower intelligence than other races in hopes that they will believe and spread the idea).
So how do we correct psychological misorientation and mentacide? Again, with right knowledge.
Our people suffer from a lack of knowledge, and you cannot effectively address that problem if you have no knowledge of your own to address it with. Pan Africanism demands that one must study!
Study source documents. Dont read what I write about Kwame Nkrumah, READ WHAT HE WROTE HIMSELF! Thats a source document! Don't read what I write about Malcolm X, READ HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY! Learn to read the medu neter! If you aren't familiar with the medu neter, do a search. We live in an age of unprecedented amounts of information. Use that to your advantage.
Study the words and the ways of Kwame Ture. Study the histories of Axum, Timbuctoo, Alexandria, Ghana, Songhai, Zulu, Mali, and Zanzibar. Studying the massive accomplishments of your people will automatically build within you pride and self-esteem, and combat white ignorance when they or their societies tell you that you haven't built anything. Start with these 4 books and these 2 DVDs. They will give you the foundations of knowledge that you will need to pursue higher levels of study.

Most of these books cost less than the door fee at a night club, and yet the knowledge that they impart can build and destroy civilizations.
The more you know about who you are and where you truly came from, the better prepared you will be to influence your future. Buy one of these books, and start today. If you dont have the ability to purchase books, go to the library. Regardless, read, take notes, and commit to memory as much as you can. Below, I present you with a diagram of the areas of knowledge that one should focus on to develop their intellect. In future posts, we will focus on each of these areas of knowledge in relationship to gaining knowledge of self and Black consciousness.

Live Pan Africanism

"Be Black, Buy Black, Think Black, and let all else take care of itself!" – Marcus Garvey

There is an old African saying that goes "to know and not to do is to not yet know". You may read every book ever written on African history and Black thought, but if you fail to put the things that you learn into action, you haven't finished learning. There are things a person can only learn by doing (ever try reading some assembly instructions, and then actually assembling the item?)

Likewise, we have been given instructions on how to achieve knowledge of self, on how to approach the world with an Afrocentric mindset, and how to solve many of the problems that we face. The answers are there! We have solutions! But these solutions must be lived – not discussed!

I write about the solutions that my organization has implemented in the form of Accountability Groups, study groups, and Black business collectives. These are my solutions offered to you and to us. Adopt them, or form your own.

There are 5 spheres of life that encompass the whole of your existence on this Earth. These are:
  • Physical
  • Metaphysical (spiritual)
  • Career and Academic
  • Relationships (Social and Family)
  • and
  • Finances and Resources
There is nothing about you and your existence in the universe that does not fall into one of these 5 rings. In looking at each of these rings, think about what they mean from an Afrocentric perspective. I teach my organization that
    • The body is both a reflection and an expression of the mind and soul. Therefore, the body is to be used to both develop ones soul and mind until ultimately the body dissolves into complete energy, awareness, and congruence with the mind and the soul. Meditation is a means of transforming the mind with the use of the body with breathing techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional stability, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things. Exercise is meant to channel ones energy and intent while forcing the body to perform beyond its natural limitations. Diet is employed to increase longevity and support ones intent with natural supplementation.
    • The spirit is NOT religion, but the non-physical seat of ones character, emotion, and intent. The spirit of a peoples are manifested by their policies and politics, by their empathy – or lack thereof , by their relationship to one another, and is reflected in their music, art, and and writings. Without the unification of the spirit of our peoples, we cannot have an effective physical unification.
    • The intellect, and the application of ones intellect within ones career must be built upon a foundation of Afrocentric thought. The Afrocentric school of thought is the first contemporary intellectual movement initiated by African scholars that has currency on a broad scale for renewal and renaissance. It did not emerge inside the traditional white academic centers but In the cultural context of the African community seeking to assert itself.
    • The family unit is as important to the Black nation as the unity of cells within the human body. Each unit must be bonded in mutual support, defense, and care of one another. The family extends beyond the four walls of ones household, and encompasses the whole of the Pan-African diaspora.
    • Finances and resources can mean hard currency, land, tools, human capital (as in ones network), transportation, and methodologies (as in corporations and collectives). When ones finances and resources are marshalled to both meet the needs and demands of ones self, ones family, and ones people, and these resources belong to the individual, and are created by the individual, then one can be called conscious. Failure to meet ones own needs, or the needs of ones family and ones nation leads to destruction. Poverty is, as Marcus Garvey explains, "a  hellish state to be in… It is a crime. To be poor, is to be hungry without possible hope of food; to be sick without hope of medicine; to be tired and sleepy without a place to lay one's head; to be naked without the hope of clothing; to be despised and comfortless. To be poor is to be a fit subject for crime and hell…. to him there is no other course but sin and death."
Now, the question for you becomes "how do I put these things into action in my own life? What does it mean to eat, to spend my money, to support a musician, to interact with my family, or to choose my major/career with an Afrocentric mindset?"
In the coming weeks and months, these 5 spheres will be addressed in great detail. Be sure to subscribe at the end of this article to be alerted as we continue to build on this topic.

Lead by Your Example

A leader leads by example not by Force. ~Sun Tzu
Once you have developed a sufficient level of knowledge of self and Black consciousness it is your responsibility to pass that knowledge on to those who have not yet acquired it. In effect, you become a leader in your own right, and as a leader, you must walk the walk as well as talk the talk.  Actions speak louder than words. If your actions do not back up your Afrocentricity or your Pan Africanism, you risk losing credibility with yourself and with others.
Dr. John Henrik Clarke said the following concerning leadership:
"I think every person that calls themselves a leader, a preacher, a policy maker of any kind should ask and answer the question in his own life time, how will my people stay on this earth? How will they be educated? How will they be schooled? How will they be housed? And how will they be defended? The answer to these questions will create the concept of enduring nationhood because it creates the concept of enduring responsibility. I am saying what ever the solution is, either we are in charge of our own destiny or we are not in charge. On that point we got to be clear, you either free or you a slave."
Some would argue that the Black community does not need a leader, or they would say that there are "too many chiefs, and not enough Indians".
I would disagree.
We need a NATION of Malcolm Xs'!
We need armies of Marcus Garvey's, Patrice Lumumba's, Steve Biko's, and Martin Delany's!  We need each and every Black man and woman to become leaders in their own right. We should also be training and arming with knowledge the next generation of Black leaders, so that if we all fall in the fight, then our Black youth will stand and carry the banner of the red, black, and green on to the hilltops of Africa.
Peace!

Boule-ish Black Media Ignored Covering Low-Income Blacks Financially Crippled By Rush Card Glitch for Weeks

by ed
rushrush
Every African-American should be highly concerned about this episode with the Rush Card glitch resulting in their prepaid cardholders account balance go to zero (0) and they could not pull money out of their account to pay bills and buy things for quite some time. But there is a bigger story here – this was an organic growing story among lower-income black people suffering and complaining for days on end and I saw none of the "major black media" took up this story. Now that Time and NBC took up the story, you will see these black media pick up the story and we have been monitoring in real time how the news unfolded. And it is disturbing.
What this article is basically going to tell you black folks out there is the very same black media you guys be supporting and you black folks be liking their stuff on Facebook – these black media are the first to screw you over when shit goes down and all of this black media do not have your back. These black media are ran by some Boule characters who sell your unbanked black behinds as a demographic to the corporate advertisers and can give a personal shit about you and what you everyday black people are going through. Let's look at what black folks went through.
explain
Basically what appeared to happen is Rush Card switched payment processors and it didn't go to well. So it sounds like some accounts were reset to zero balance during the switch and the money did not transfer over seamlessly. This left the prepaid cardholders of the Rush Card unable to withdraw their direct deposit money and they found out the hard way by being denied at the cash register or trying to pay a bill. Then they went to the ATM and saw their account balance being zero. This was going on for over a week from the reports I read from people posting.
These are lower-income black folks, the majority of the African-American population that is going through this. You would think black media would realize this is a big deal but they didn't. And when you are living check-to-check, you know things get out of hand fast. The late bill has a $30 late service fee and you see zero balance on your Rush Card account. You ran out of diapers and formula and was waiting on your direct deposit to buy more but you cannot and see zero balance on your Rush Card account. You need to put gas in your car to get to work but you cannot because your Rush Card has a zero balance. This is how fast things can get out of hand when you are living check-to-check. And here are some of the postings that I saw that tugged at my bleeding heart:
poorbaby1
poorbaby2
poorbaby3
poorbaby4
poorbaby5
But you know what I didn't see? I didn't see none of the black media outlets even covered this angle. Is it because Russell Simmons is one of those black media and it was a cover up to protect Russell Simmons image in black media? And if this was the case, who expense and who had to suffer? All of the low-income black people who couldn't get at their money? You know how frustrating and crazy it feels to be poor and not have access to your money?
blackamericaweb
financialjunetheen
newsone

You see none of these black news at the time of this writing had any specials, any top coverage to get to the bottom of the situation. You saw the news of retail store credit card security breaches and other financial companies who had glitches but you saw nothing of black media covering the issue with our low-income black brothas and sistas who were suffering and going through financial problems. Like I said, some of them low-income black folks probably got car payment late fees of $40 and stuff like that piled on them because they couldn't pay bills – who is going to eat that cost?
Overall and like I said, you brothas and sistas don't even realize the score and what is going on around you. You low-income black folks are patronizing these black media that don't give a damn about you and you low-income black folks are dumb as hell to sign up to a prepaid card system giving them 100% of your direct deposit amount like a stupid dumbass – that's why you low-income and busted in the first damn place, don't know how to handle your damn money. If your broke black ass actually read Dream and Hustle, I blogged about the risks years ago about poor cats and these prepaid debit cards - http://dreamandhustle.com/2012/04/are-broke-cats-at-risk-using-prepaid-debit-cards/
You poor dumbass black folks follow celebrities too damn much talking about Magic Johnson is an entrepreneur and Dr. Umar Johnson is – what yall be saying Dr. Umar Johnson is because all I see him do is have a big mouth. But me on the other hand, I can build my stuff and put in real work and not be an empty celebrity endorsement cat like Russell Simmons and his Rush Card stuff. You go to a health clinic Magic Johnson run, he ain't going to be in there talking about let me draw some blood then accidently prick himself and then prick you and you stare forward pretending that ish did not just happened. You go to a strip club with Dr. Umar Johnson hoping to save some black queens off the pole and five minutes after you enter, you cannot find Dr. Umar Johnson because he is in the back banging a stripper. At least with me, I'm a real technology expert and when I put out stuff, I can work on it directly and you have my word on what is going down and how to get it resolved. Yall poor low-income unbanked check-to-check black folks be star-struck too damn much and that's why yall all caught up giving some damn prepaid card all your direct deposit because you like some celebrity endorsement – man yall are stupid as hell, real talk.
Look, stop doing stupid moves with your money. Now, I know I made fun of you cats and your low-income and being broke and stuff but let me give you a secret – you actually make good money, the problem is you don't know how to handle your money and live in your means. And poor black folks have what is known as a ghetto tax but it is really a stupid tax because these opportunists cats learn to put fees and surcharges on you broke cats at every little thing you do like the Rush Card be doing. Here is what you need to do.
Find a Damn Bank. Very few black people cannot get a bank account, I don't know who told you that you cannot get a damn bank account but that is some pre-Homeland Security stuff. You can still get a new bank account almost anywhere no matter how many checks you bounced or whatever – just go out and try and at least do a savings account.
Do Cash, Dammit. Why do you need a prepaid debit card? You check-to-check characters don't need any payment cards to conduct business? You ain't traveling no damn where and renting cars and stuff. You can buy money orders from the supermarket, stop making up crap. Why can't you just get a check from your job, then cash it at the bank the job write the checks out to? If the check from your job is out of state, then what you do is a partial direct deposit where you only put in the money to pay bills in a prepaid direct deposit but $150-$200 is a check that comes directly to you that you can cash or use as a backup.
Here is the thing and we will be about this in 2016 but you brothas and sistas don't need all this prepaid nonsense and I wish you stop all of this right now! Find a bank account anywhere or a credit union account anywhere and even a savings account will do. Direct deposit into that – in fact, there is no reason to even have a debit/credit card and you fooling yourself if you believe you need one. You know why you want to a debit card? So you can subscribe to monthly subscription services, swipe when you emotions want to spend and waste your damn money as a consumer. Switch your ass back to just getting cash in a savings account, take your poor black ass to the walking/biking park and go jogging and eat black beans, bananas and canned salmon and stop trying to be a damn spending consumer!
And most important - please stop supporting these garbage black media outlets that don't give a damn about black people..

One Million Black Voters and supporters & Your Opportunities Are Bigger Than Your Oppression

Join One Million Black Voters for FREE and FREEdom !

This movement is simply called, "One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors" (OMCBV&C).

We are calling for (minimally) one million Race-conscious Black voters to join forces with us, and as our One Million continue to hear and heed our call-to-arms, the abundance of talent, skills, and expertise to be found among you will readily become evident, and each of you will begin to find or make your place in our ranks, and take on assignments critical to our eventual success.
What is a "Conscious Black Voter?" The One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors Movement refers to Black individuals who are fully aware that our race needs the best-and-brightest we produce to place the interests of our people collectively in "first-position." In doing so, we put into practice what all other racial and ethnic groups do routinely and automatically.

By calling the best and brightest among us to join forces and pool resources to build the capacity of our race to advance and protect its collective interests, the One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors campaign seeks to have black people do what other groups have done and do every day: Lift ourselves out of our lowly condition by our own collective efforts! A conscious Black voter would do this by voting as part of a solid block of Black voters determined to influence public policy decisions so that they favor rather than hurt black people, and open pathways to a better future for our children.

Correspondingly, a conscious Black contributor would readily pool his/her financial and other resources and resourcefulness to provide the wherewithal to underwrite the costs of projects and programs designed and intended to serve the needs and interests of our people.

To the skeptics out there who think Black folks are too individualistic to come together in such a large number, that one million Black folks will not cooperate, that we have too many schisms among us, and we will not trust one another, we say, "Not so."

To the doubters who continue to have faith in Democratic AND Republican platforms, which have ignored our needs, collaborated against our best interests, and engaged in flawed analyses of problems and the solutions thereof, we say, "not so fast."

We submit to you that even within the most reactionary, non-revolutionary Black person there is at least a REMNANT of a DESIRE to love Black people; and it is that residue of unrequited love that we are appealing to. Our assertion is that there are at least 1 million Black folks actively seeking for ways, means and reasons for us to come together to take corrective ACTION.

We invite you to become One of the Million Conscious Black Voters and help us break the ties that bind our people to dependency, self-negation, and the lowest rung on the political, social and economic ladder of American society.
Be "One of the Million" and let's finally let our people and everyone else know that we are very serious about being economically and politically empowered.

Message to Our African-American Young Adults – Your Opportunities Are Bigger Than Your Oppression

by ed
Young black couple in love leaning head against each other
To my younger brothas and sistas out there, if you want to make black lives matter and make a difference and betterment of yourself more than what the sorry worthless elder black generation has done and left nothing for you to build upon, then you need to think different and approach the challenges differently. Overall, in the 21st century, your opportunities are greater than your oppression and somehow you young African-Americans been distracted to focus more on your oppression than take advantage of your opportunities. If you are not focusing on your opportunities, then you are self-oppressing yourself.
You have to learn STEM and that is not a generic statement and let me be very specific with your ass. You have to learn how to create your own media instead of wonder why the bigoted mainstream media don't cover African-Americans. But you have to do it in a way that you compete for the same audience as mainstream media and don't try to make it some "black media" crap. Don't ever do a damn thing in your life as a black-orientated operation, you focus on making whatever you do global and mainstream and take over the world because the world is yours.
You have to learn technology and how to build. This means you need to learn how to manage data science and data analytics. The number one thing you cats are lacking where you getting your butt kicks is you do not have proper data sets to build intelligence and decision making upon. You have to read up on how to create and manage databases and data sets. Then you have to learn how to build service structures to perform tasks and also create business enterprise systems using open source software from call centers to peer-to-peer payments to manufacturing.
But here is the secret and this is what you young African-American adults need to do. You need to learn how to fail fast and get rejected fast. Failing fast means try something and know instantly that ish ain't going to work and you better try something new the next day. You still see old ass African-Americans talking ish about reparations and pooling our money together not realizing those are failure models but they still run their mouth about that crap. You instead better recognize a failure model and focus on another way to accomplish something real fast after failure to move towards a success model.
In addition, you have to learn how to get rejected fast. That means knowing quickly that Venture Capital firms in Silicon Valley do not want to invest in inner city technology firms ran by black people and will reject you – don't sit around trying to pander to bigots who don't like you. Learn quickly that mainstream media and local news are not friends of black people and only show African-Americans in a negative light. Learn very quickly that certain groups of people don't like you and don't sit around trying to get them to like you – find out immediately where people stand when it comes to liking/disliking you. Fast rejection is also a strategy in dating and relationships, don't sit around thinking someone like your ass the same way you like them, approach them and look for a fast rejection or fast acceptance so you can keep it moving.
Once you learn how to fail and get better, learn to quickly know who rejecting you and who accepting you and you get the skills up, then you African-American adult youth will be poised to take advantages of the opportunities around you and there are huge and big opportunities. We are talking about urban transformation in your hoods that you can repurpose into a world-class city and that is your spot. We are talking about working with other emerging economies worldwide like China building megacities and South Africa economic modernization and middle class growth and being advisors and consultants to bring urban culture to these areas. We are talking about financial technology solutions to build up capital and resources such as homegrown mobile payments as well as crowdfunding. And we are talking about manufacturing everything from shoes to electric vehicles. And infrastructures such as building think-tank collectives and technology clusters right in our own communities.
The opportunities are greater than your oppression and stop focusing on the negative things that will go away the minute you take advantage of your opportunities. This Dream and Hustle blog – cats out there are desperate to keep you away from reading this blog and the solutions we got. You will see more black self-important clowns more desperate for you not to know about this blog. I don't write anything in this blog for popularity or for any of you guys to admire me, I write this damn blog to help you see solutions and see they can be implemented. And it's time for you to stop having other people tell you to focus on oppression and negativity and change your ways and approach to focus instead of the opportunities and that is what me and my crew is here for.
