Retirement & Education Savings
Tips to Lower Taxes in 2017

G&G Readers,

Now that the tax filing deadline has passed for the 2016 tax year, this is a perfect time to start thinking about some simple ways to boost retirement savings and at the same time lower overall tax liability for 2017.

Start Thinking IRA: For 2017, the maximum IRA contribution is $5,500, or $6,500 if you are over the age of fifty. Contributions can generally be made in pre-tax, after-tax, or Roth.  A pre-tax IRA, also known as a traditional IRA, is one of the more popular ways to save for retirement that also offers tax advantages. Contributions made to a traditional IRA may be fully or partially deductible, depending on your circumstances, and, generally, amounts in a traditional IRA (including earnings and gains) are not taxed until distributed, which is not required until one reaches the age of 70 1/2.
An after-tax IRA, also known as a non-deductible IRA, is a traditional IRA that contains nondeductible contributions. Nondeductible contributions to traditional IRAs often occur when one makes too much to make a deductible contribution, or is limited because of employer 401(k) plan contributions. When one takes a distribution from an after-tax IRA, the portion of the distribution coming from nondeductible contributions is tax-free, although, any income and earnings generated from that after-tax contribution would be subject to tax, and a 10% early distribution penalty if the individual is under the age of 59 1/2.

A Roth IRA is an improved version of the after-tax nondeductible IRA.  Although one does not benefit from a tax deduction for contributions, all of the qualified distributions, including earnings, come out tax-free. To contribute to a Roth IRA, ones modified adjusted gross income must fall below the annual limits for your filing status (which is $196,000 if filing jointly for 2017). One can withdraw contributions any time, but must be 59 1/2 years old and you must have had a Roth IRA open for at least five tax years before one can withdraw income and gains without tax or penalty.

Business Owners Rejoice:  Owning a business in 2017 can have some significant retirement tax benefits, if one is aware of them. The scope of the benefits is somewhat dependent on whether the business has full-time employees other than the owners.  For example, a sole proprietor or a business entity with no full-time employees, may be eligible to contribute up to $54,000 ($60,000 if the participant is over the age of fifty), to a solo 401(k) plan in pre-tax, after-tax or Roth.  Whereas, if the business has non-owner full-time employees, the business owner’s total contribution may be limited due to the cost of offering maximum employer profit sharing contributions to all employees.  Nevertheless, business owners should consult with their tax advisor to examine how establishing an employer retirement plan, such as a 401(k) plan, SEP or SIMPLE IRA for their business could potentially help their retirement savings, as well as reduce their annual tax liability.

Get to Know the 529 Plan.  A 529 Plan is an education savings plan operated by a state or educational institution designed to help families set aside funds for future college costs. It is named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. Nearly every state now has at least one 529 plan available, but the plan characteristics may differ by state.   529 plans are usually categorized as either prepaid or savings plans. In general, the tax advantages of establishing and funding a 529 plan is that earnings are not subject to federal tax and generally not subject to state tax when used for the qualified education expenses of the designated beneficiary, such as tuition, fees, books, as well as room and board. Contributions to a 529 plan, however, are not deductible. One may make a contribution of $14,000 a year or less to a 529 plan qualifies for the annual federal gift tax exclusion. Under special rules unique to 529 plans, one can gift a lump sum of up to $70,000 ($140,000 for joint gifts) and avoid federal gift tax, provided one makes an election to spread the gift evenly over five years Thus, establishing and funding a 529 plan may will not offer you an immediate tax deduction, but it will allow you to help your children afford college by having the contributions and earnings grow without tax over time, thereby, potentially allowing one to spend their retirement savings on other expenses.

HSA Triple Tax Benefit: IRC Section 223 allows individuals who are covered by a compatible health plan, often referred to as a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), to set aside funds on a tax-free basis up to the contribution limit to pay for certain out-of-pocket medical expenses. Health Savings Accounts have a triple tax benefit—funds go into the account tax-free, funds grow tax-free and remain completely tax-free when used for eligible medical expenses.  The IRS imposes certain requirements in order to be eligible to contribute to an HSA, such as one cannot be covered by Medicare.  The maximum 2017 contribution is $6750 for families, with a $1000 catch-up for individuals over the age of fifty-five.

Planning and saving for retirement does not have to be painful.  Understanding the rules and employing a consistent approach can help increase retirement savings while simultaneously reducing ones tax liability. However, a few simple retirement planning moves can help make the difference when April 17, 2018 rolls around.

Christopher Kill-umbus: The Serial Killer Celebrated

 Alafia (peace) All,

Every second Monday in October, Banks and schools are closed and government offices are empty in remembrance of the infamous European explorer, Christopher Kill-lumbus. For hundreds of years, Columbus has had a special place in the history of the New World. To AfRAkans, celebrating Columbus Day is actually celebrating the mass destruction of our own people! Instead of a day where we see parades and floats down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, it should be a day of mourning.

In other words ...if you are black and/or your ankhcestors are one of the indigenous peoples this mass murderer and his thugs, beast, robbers, rapist and murders came in contact ...YOU ARE OUT RIGHT INSANE TO CELEBRATE LET ALONE RECOGNIZE THIS AMERICAN / EUROPEAN WORSHIP DAY.

Not only was Columbus part of the initial european conquest of the world, his legacy serves as a blockade to the real history behind the purposely-covered fact that there were others, including AfRAkans not only in the America's, but sailed from other parts of the world to here well before him.

Still there's something HIS-STORIANS marvel Columbus for than the others. If you ask me, it's that thing that resides in YTs nature, the barbaric act of violence! He claimed everything he saw when he set foot on these territories. Native lands, mineral wealth, natural resources, and even the inhabitants immediately became European "property." This could only be launched with violence using torture, maim, rape, and other unspeakable acts.

Columbus himself wrote about his first encounter with the extremely peaceful and welcoming Arawak Indians of the Bahama Islands:

“They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron...They would make fine servants...With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.”

And so he did.

“I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts.”

Columbus had already written back to his investors in Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, that the Caribbean islands possessed “great mines of gold.”

It was all lies. Columbus was desperately attempting to justify their investment to continue with his exploitations of the Americas.

In Haiti, Columbus ordered the natives to bring him all of their gold. But there was hardly an ounce of gold anywhere on the island. So Columbus had them slaughtered. Within two years, 250,000 were dead.

Columbus introduced two phenomena that revolutionized race relations and transformed the modern world: (1) the taking of land, wealth, and labor from indigenous peoples, which lead to their extermination, and (2) the transatlantic slave trade, which created a racial underclass.

Columbus' own writings reflect this increasing ideology on racism. When he tried selling Queen Isabella on the wonders of the Americas, the Indians were "well built" and "of quick intelligence." "They have very good customs," he wrote, "and the king maintains a very marvelous state, of a style so orderly that it is a pleasure to see it, and they have good memories and they wish to see everything and ask what it is and for what it is used." Later, when Columbus was justifying his terrorist attacks and enslavement of them, they became "cruel" and "stupid," "a people warlike and numerous, whose customs and religion are very different from ours."

Frederick Douglas 4th of July Message

Hetepu (Peace & Blessings) All,

I was listening to NPR a few years back and they were discussing the topic of how the legislature in Tucson, AZ struck down the school system from teaching Mexican-American history in the schools.  It was considered discriminatory to teach such subjects and those schools who continued teaching the subject would be subject to losing 10% of their state annual funding.

Now ... let me get this straight.  Even though the majority of students in the Tucson school district are of Mexican/American descent, and Tucson ... better yet all of Arizona use to be Mexico before it was stolen from them, it's considered to be discrimination to teach Mexican/American history?

Let's wake up folks...this is their way (let you figure out who "their" is) of keeping the lid closed on the bottle.  As long as you stay ignorant to Our-Story and continue to dream and live in their lullaby world of lies, deceit, destruction and "RELIGION."  You'll continue to be ignorant to the truth and waste your time giving them your hard earned money on their fictitious "Holy-days" making them richer and as Malcolm said, " ... while the community you live or come from continues to get poorer and poorer every day..."

So, you can bet your last dime ... I "AIN'T" celebrating "NO" FREAKING 4th of Ju-"Lie" today or ever again. Ignorance is when you don't know, but when you do know and keep doing the same thing ... it's plain old "Stupidity."

Frederick Douglas 4th of July Message

Fellow citizens; above your national, tumultuous joy, I hear the mournful wail of millions! - whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are today rendered more intolerable by the jubilee shouts
that reach them...

Whether we turn to the declarations of the past, or to the professions of the present, the conduct of the nation seems equally hideous and revolting. America is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly bids herself to be false to the future....

What to the American slave is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.

To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, hypocrisy - a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.

There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States, at this very hour"....

Frederick Douglass

On July 5, 1852, Douglass gave a speech at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, held at Rochester's Corinthian Hall. It was biting oratory, in which the speaker told his audience, "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn." And he asked them, "Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day?"

Should Black Folks Celebrate 4th of Ju-"Lie"

Should Black Folks Celebrate 4th of Ju-"Lie"

Fighting for Your Right "Not" to Party:Why I'm Not Celebrating July 4th
by Min. Paul Scott

On July 5th 1852, the great orator and abolitionist, Frederick Douglas delivered an electrifying speech where he posed what was possibly the most significant question of his time; "What to the slave is the Fourth of July?" He received a thunderous round of applause.

A hundred and twenty some odd years later, July 4th 1976, as a nine year old junior militant, I stood defiantly on a picnic table, raised my sand shovel and posed a similar question. Why do black people celebrate Independence Day, anyway?"

The response I received at the "Pic-Nic" or Pic-A-Nigger? "Shut up and eat your hot dog! "The issue of whether African Americans should celebrate the 4th of July is one of those eternal questions that is often asked this time of year but never receives a valid answer. Why do black folks feel obligated to dress up in red white and blue top hats and sing the Star Spangled Banner when our ancestors were in the field picking cotton while the colonists were getting their party on?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a day off from work and a trip to the beach as much as the next guy but it's time to replace political correctness with historical correctness. As a matter of full disclosure, I've never prided myself as the all American boy type. I hate baseball and even the thought of apple pie makes me nauseous.

So my view of American history may be cynical at best.  "African Americans were not free in 1776", did not have full citizenship in 1876, were still fighting for equal rights in 1976 and in the aftermath of the Sean Bell and Trayvon Martin murder, 2076 ain't looking too promising either.

Contrary to popular belief, America's victory in the Revolutionary War did not bring my ancestors one iota closer to Independence than if the Red Coats would have won. Just if the British had won, instead of having a Big Mac and a Pepsi for lunch, I would be dining on crumpets with a spot of tea. And I would probably be listening to Sir Paul McCartney in my ipod instead of 50 Cents.

Although, many overly patriotic zealots claim to cherish freedom of speech, speaking against this country's day of national pride is considered sacrilegious, worthy of a trip to the woodshed, or worse.

Although the constitution grants freedom of expression, in the 21st century, freedom of speech comes with a heavy price.  There is always the distinct possibility that you could wake up one morning in a cozy little cell in Guantanamo Bay or at best find yourself sitting across the desk from a stone faced IRS agent trying to explain why your last year's vacation at Disney World was tax deductible.

Should I have to live with the fear of "America love it or leave it" being graffitied on my front door just because I will have the only house in the neighborhood not proudly flying Ole Glory? As America becomes increasingly more culturally diverse he will have to deal with the blatant contradictions in His-Story books.

While Tony Romanomay be throwing a big party for Columbus Day maybe he shouldn’t invite his coworker Blue Sky Runningbear to the shindig. And while John Smith may pay tribute to his WWII veteran grandfather to commemorate every V-Day, his neighbor, Yoko Tshima, may morn the death of hers.

Americans must begin to respect each others rights to party or not to party on 4th of Ju-Lie. While some will dismiss my views as those of some ultra militant, left wing radical who is still miffed that Rev. Jesse Jackson didn't get the Democratic Party nomination back in 1988, could it be that I represent the views of millions of the silent minority who are afraid to express themselves for fear of McCarthy-like persecution?

So, don't expect to see me at the annual fireworks show this year with my finger stuck in the potato salad. I'll be home reflecting on the fact that for millions of African Americans, on 4th of Ju-Lie, the road to Freedom is still under construction.

"It's Ok not to know, It's a shame not to want to know."

What to Do After the Tax Deadline

What to Do After the Tax Deadline

G&G Readers,
Tax day has come and gone for most people, but some taxpayers may still be dealing with their taxes. Here are some tips for handling some typical after-tax-day issues:

Didn’t File by April 18?
There is no penalty for filing a late return after the tax deadline if the taxpayer receives a refund. Penalties and interest only accrue on unfiled returns if taxes are not paid by April 18. Anyone who did not file and owes tax should file a return as soon as they can and pay as much as possible to reduce penalties and interest. The penalties for not filing a tax return are 10 times greater than those for filing but not being able to pay the taxes due. Go without filing your taxes for more than four months, and you'll face a "failure to file" penalty of 25% of your outstanding tax due -- along with interest on that balance.

For INSTRUCTIONS on how to get your taxes prepared visit our website, click on the "TAXES" tab, "Tax Consulting Forms" and then download the "Tax Preparation Worksheet (2016)."

“Where’s My Refund?”
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool is available on IRS.gov, IRS2Go and by phone at 800-829-1954. Taxpayers need specific information to use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool. That information includes the primary Social Security number on the return, the filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.) and the amount of refund.

Changing Withholdings?
Events – like a change in marital status – during the year may change the exemptions, adjustments, deductions or credits a taxpayer expects to claim on next year’s return. Employees can use the IRS’s online Withholding Calculator to figure and then adjust their withholding by filling out a new Form W-4, normally with the company’s personnel office. Taxpayers who do not have taxes withheld from their pay or don’t have enough tax withheld, may need to make estimated tax payments. Taxpayers who are self-employed normally need to make estimated payments that can be adjusted to avoid a balance due in the future.

Need to View a Tax Account Balance or Make a Payment? Taxpayers who owe taxes can view their balance, pay with IRS Direct Pay, by debit or credit card or apply for an online payment agreement. Before accessing your tax account online, you must authenticate your identity through the Secure Access process. Several other electronic payment options are available on IRS.gov/payments. They are secure and easy and taxpayers receive immediate confirmation when they submit their payment.

Need to Fix an Error on a Return?
Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, must be filed by paper and is available on IRS.gov/forms at any time. Do not file an amended return before the original return has been processed. Taxpayers should file an amended tax return to change the filing status, or correct income, deductions or credits. The IRS generally corrects math errors and mails a request for any missing documents. Use "Where's My Amended Return?" tool to track the status of your amended return. It will take up to three weeks after mailing the return to show up in the IRS system. Processing can take up to 16 weeks.

Need Help Responding to an IRS Notice or Letter?
An IRS notice or letter will explain the reason for the contact and give instructions on how to handle the issue.  Most questions can be answered by visiting the “Understanding Your Notice or IRS Letter,” on IRS.gov. Taxpayers can call the phone number included in the notice if they still have questions. Taxpayers have fundamental rights under the law. The “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” presents these rights in 10 categories. This helps taxpayers when they interact with the IRS. Publication 1, Your Rights as a Taxpayer, highlights a list of taxpayer rights and the agency’s obligations to protect them. If normal IRS channels don’t solve the problem, the Taxpayer Advocate Service is available at 877-777-4778.

Watch Out for Scams
Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain an ongoing threat to taxpayers. The IRS will "NEVER" contact a taxpayer via e-mail, text or social media. Any e-mail that appears to be from the IRS about a refund or tax problem is probably an attempt by scammers to steal information. Forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov. The first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue will be by mail.

So, it will be imperative that you have a "Tax Professional" and "not just a tax preparer" assisting you with your taxes.  Trust me folks, there is a BIG difference.

One of the benefits of being a client with G&G Associates is that you'll get a free 30 min pre-tax preparation session to make sure you are gathering your documents appropriately before you submit your documents for tax preparation.

5 Last Minute Tax Tips You Need to Know Right Now

5 Last Minute Tax Tips
You Need to Know Right Now

G&G Readers,

The tax filing deadline is just days away, and if you haven't yet filed your 2016 tax return, the finish line is looming just ahead.

As you crank through the things you need to do to get your returns prepared and filed, it's essential not to lose sight of some key ideas that smart taxpayers always keep in mind.  By being aware of these simple rules, you can do your best to pay as little tax as necessary and avoid unnecessary audit or other risks.

1. Not filing a return at all is "NEVER" the right answer:
When facing an imminent deadline, more taxpayers than you would think decide not to file a tax return at all. This is particularly the case if you're strapped for cash and won't be able to pay any taxes that you owe. The temptation to try to avoid the notice of the IRS can be almost overwhelming.
However, you should always go ahead and file a return, even if you can't pay the tax you owe. The penalties for not filing a tax return are 10 times greater than those for filing but not being able to pay the taxes due.

Go without filing your taxes for more than four months, and you'll face a "failure to file" penalty of 25% of your outstanding tax due -- along with interest on that balance. By filing or at minimum getting an extension, you can avoid most of those penalties and put yourself in much better shape going forward.
For INSTRUCTIONS on how to get your taxes prepared visit our website, click on the "TAXES" tab, "Tax Consulting Forms" and then download the "Tax Preparation Worksheet (2016)."

If you need an EXTENSION filed, visit our website, click on the "TAXES" tab, "Tax Consulting Forms" and then download the "Tax Preparation Extension Worksheet," and send it in to us and we'll file your extension for you.

2. It's easy to get some extra time to file:
Just because you need to file eventually doesn't mean that you need to be in a hurry to do so by the April 18 deadline. It's trivial to get an automatic six-month extension of time to file your return. In fact, if you go to this portion of the IRS website, you can electronically file for that automatic exemption -- regardless of how high or low your income is.

However, remember that an extension to file "IS NOT" an extension to pay. Late-payment penalties of 0.5% per month start running after April 18 even if you don't have to file until October. Therefore, if you expect to owe tax this year, you should make an estimated payment with your extension request to get that balance paid off and avoid unnecessary additional charges.

3. There's help available for many taxpayers:
With just days to go, it'll be hard to find a professional tax preparer who can give you a last-minute appointment. But here at G&G Associates we have the experience to assist you with all your tax needs.  We can service clients anywhere in the world and we look forward to assisting you in getting your tax return prepared for the 2016 and beyond tax season. (Referrals available upon request)

If you are a returning client you'll get a 25% discount off your tax preparation fees. If you are a new client you'll get $40 off our normal fees. If you are active duty or retired military you'll get a 15% discount. If you are a senior citizen (above 65) you'll get a 20% discount.

At G&G Associates, we GUARANTEE to beat "ANY" other tax professional’s price. We take pride in not nickeling and diming our customers with unnecessary charges & fees.

We are looking forward to doing business with you for the upcoming tax season.

4. Take advantage of last-minute tax savings opportunities:
A few tax breaks are still available even as time runs out on the 2016 tax season. Contributing to a traditional IRA can help you reduce your taxable income by as much as $5,500 for those younger than 50 or $6,500 for those 50 or older.

In addition, if you qualify for a health savings account, you can make tax deductible contributions through the April filing deadline as well. These vehicles let you make contributions now that track back to the 2016 tax year, giving you one last opportunity to cut your tax bill for the year.

5. Filing electronically has some key advantages:
If you want to be sure your return gets filed in a timely manner, it's hard to beat electronic filing. You'll get an acknowledgment of receipt from the IRS shortly after you file, and you won't have to worry about whether the return gets through the mail properly.

In addition, the IRS processes electronically filed returns more efficiently and quickly, and refunds come more quickly. E-filing has gotten easier over time, and it's becoming an even smarter move for those who expect money back from the IRS.

So, it will be imperative that you have a "Tax Professional" and "not just a tax preparer" doing your taxes.  Trust me folks, there is a BIG difference.

One of the benefits of being a client with G&G Associates is that you'll get a free 30 min pre-tax preparation session to make sure you are gathering your documents appropriately before you submit your documents for tax preparation.

So, contact us today to file you extension and/or schedule an appointment.

Visit our website for more information and free online webinar classes to help you make sure you are audit proofing your records, or contact us today to set your appointment if you need a “TAX” OR “FINANCIAL” one-on-one consultation.
Until the next time!
